July 10 2012 – Fassbender to star/produce Assassin’s Creed
The Shame star is set to take a role both in front of and behind the camera for the big-screen adaptation of the best-selling computer game series, reported Variety.
Michael – who has developed the film with Conor McCaughan and will produce through his DMC Film company – is tipped to take the lead role of Desmond Miles, a bartender who is sent back in time to retrieve historical artefacts after learning his ancestors were trained assassins.
“Michael Fassbender was our first choice to play the franchise’s iconic hooded hero. Michael is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor,” said Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures.
The popular game, which was first released in 2007, has spawned four subsequent sequels and various spin-offs, leading to speculation that this could turn into a potential film franchise.
The project is still in early stages, with a writer and director yet to be found.
Michael, who is set to start filming Twelve Years A Slave – marking his third reunion with Hunger filmmaker Steve McQueen – made his film producing debut with Bafta-winning short movie Pitch Black Heist, which he also starred in.
